Privacy and Release of Student Education Records

Privacy and Release of Student Education Records: official university statement.

A few important notes about YOUR privacy:

  • PLEASE COMPLETE the Student Information Release BEFORE anyone contacts Ohio State on your behalf. For example, the person paying your tuition does not automatically have the right to your academic records. You will need to provide release permissions before the university will provide non-directory information (for example, grades and advising notes) to anyone besides you.
  • Protect your passwords; do not distribute them to anyone.
  • E-mail between you and a university faculty/staff person is officially part of your academic record, and advisors will, when necessary, copy/paste an e-mail exchange into AdvisingConnect - the university system for shared notes. They will redact extremely personal information you may include in e-mail. E-mail is NOT a secure form of communication, it is in your best interest to be careful with content.
